In the United States, Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell was victorious at the Tiger Woods-hosted World Challenge, beating local favourite Keegan Bradley by three strokes to clinch the title.
As rainy weather plagued the course at Sherwood during the final round, McDowell recovered from a bogey at the thirteenth hole to lift the trophy with two birdies, at the 16th and final hole respectively. As the crowd cheered him on, the Irishman looked elated as he carded his first win in two years at the late-season tournament which is played by invitation only.
McDowell began the final round two strokes ahead of the pack, and managed to keep a cool head on Sunday despite a charge for victory by Bradley, who cut the Irishman's lead down to one stroke at one stage. The two players traded birdies and bogeys over the front nine, with McDowell managing to hold his position at the top of the leader board. After an impressive back nine however, the Irishman emerged victorious.
In South Africa, the well-known Nedbank Golf Challenge invitational tournament was won by Martin Kaymer of Germany. In a final round line-up which included local favourites and major winners Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, Kaymer held his nerve despite a bogey late in the tournament which presented Schwartzel with an opportunity to close in on the German champion. The South African took second place.
However, Kaymer had no intention of leaving South Africa without the trophy and he held out over the final 18 holes to clinch the title. Kaymer also banked the $ 2 million prize money, the richest purse of any tournament in Africa.
Oosthuizen, who was regarded as a potential winner at the beginning of the tournament, had to settle for fourth place, behind Kaymer, Schwartzel, and Bill Haas of the United States.
