On the US PGA Tour, the American Brandt Snedeker continued his top form by winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday.

Snedeker was tied for the lead overnight, having finished the third round level-pegging with fellow-American James Hahn. The champion soon took charge of the final round with an eagle at the second hole, setting the scene for a momentous victory after he carded a seven-under-par 65 to lift the trophy and set an all-time record score for the tournament. Chris Kirk, also of the United States, took second place while Hahn was tied for third.

Sunday’s win marks Snedeker’s fifth victory on the PGA Tour, and his second victory in just six starts. As the young champion reflected on the great strides his game has made over the past six months, he told journalists that a major win was now his top priority. If the American’s current form is set to continue, this goal may well be achievable in the 2013 season.

The European Tour travelled to South Africa last week, where the Joburg Open was won by local favourite Richard Sterne.

As the final round unfolded, the late summer weather seemed to spur on the competition at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club where Sterne found himself in direct competition for the lead with compatriot and 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. In the face of stiff competition, Sterne unleashed an impressive display of skill and focus on Sunday to card an eight-under-par 64 for the day, beating Schwartzel by a sizeable margin of seven strokes.

Sterne, who celebrated his sixth career win on the European Tour at the Joburg Open, has made a remarkable recovery since a serious back injury threatened to end his career during the 2010 season. Three years on, the South African has returned to the top level of professional golf, with his victory on Sunday confirming his status as a serious contender at any European Tour event.
