In the United States, golf fans were treated to a great display of skill from some of the world's top players as the US Open took place for the 112th time at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.
After four rounds of challenging golf, the American Webb Simpson emerged victorious as he beat compatriot and first round leader Michael Thompson and Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell by a single stroke to win his first-ever major.
The 2012 US Open saw the world's best players being thoroughly challenged by the tough course at the Olympic Club, with such golfing greats as Tiger Woods finding the course conditions extremely tricky as they negotiated the fairways and greens in San Francisco over the four day tournament. A host of top-ranked players including David Toms and Jim Furyk followed Thompson and McDowell in third place, with former world number one Ernie Els finishing fourth.
Simpson, who won twice on the PGA Tour last year, surprised overnight leaders Furyk and McDowell with an impressive final round performance. With two birdies within five holes on the back nine, the American swept into contention and was able to hold his nerve as he weathered several challenges for the trophy. In the end however, Simpson was able to maintain his slim one-stroke lead as he completed the final holes with his usual focus and accuracy.
For Simpson, who turned professional in 2008, winning a major title is a major career milestone. Since his debut, this talented young golfer has quickly established himself as a serious contender on the US PGA Tour, having won two tournaments last season to confirm his place at the highest level of international golf. Fans should watch this talented and highly skilled player carefully as he joins the ranks of the world's best international players.
