On the PGA Tour, Bae Sang-moon of South Korea won his maiden championship when he was victorious at the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday.
As windy weather made play more than a little tricky during the final round, the young Korean held his nerve after his early four stroke lead was reduced to a tie for victory after a bogey at the 15th hole. America’s Keegan Bradley briefly challenged Bae for the lead, but the cool-headed champion managed to win by a single stroke after eighteen holes.
Sunday’s victory marks Bae Sang-moon’s first win on the PGA Tour. The 26-year-old has won 11 championships in Asia and was keen to prove his golfing prowess in North America – Sunday’s victory places the young champion in the North American winner’s circle as he launches his international career this season.
The European Tour also crowned a first-time winner last week when the American Peter Uihlein lifted the trophy at the Madeira Islands Open on Sunday.
The American finished off his final round with a string of birdies to win by two strokes over Denmark’s Morten Madsen and the Chilean Mark Tullo, who was overnight leader. Madsen had appeared ready to take the championship to a playoff earlier in the final round, but a double bogey at the final hole took him out of the running, leaving a clear path open for Uihlein’s victory.
A new champion emerged in the realm of women’s golf on Sunday when America’s Jennifer Johnson won the Mobile Bay Classic. Coming up from the back with a total of eight birdies in the final round, Johnson carded just one bogey to score a seven-under-par 65.
This impressive performance allowed the rookie to edge out compatriot Jessica Korda and Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum with a one-stroke victory. A sizeable group of players including Karrie Webb and Shin Jiyai took third place.
