On Sunday Patrick Reed won his first-ever US PGA title at the Wyndham Championship. This week’s player profile takes a look at the background and early career of this talented young player as he makes his mark on North American golf.
23-year-old Reed was born in San Antonio Texas, moving with his family to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he enjoyed a highly successful amateur golf career during his high school years.
Showing exceptional golfing talent and dedication, Reed racked up a number of victories before graduating high school. In 2006 he led his high school golf team at the State Championships, while winning the Junior British Open in the same season. In 2007 he repeated his success as a high school golf team leader while qualifying for the US Amateur. Reed was an All-American in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively.
Reed’s college golf career was also marked by several victories: his team at Augusta State University were NCAA Champions in both 2010 and 2011. Reed also won the 2010 Jones Cup Invitational, a sign of things to come as he prepared to turn professional.
Following his successful amateur career, Reed took the leap to professional golf in 2011. The young champion was able to weather the competition on the Nationwide Tour, winning a total of $25 000 in his debut year.
The 2012 season was a successful one for Reed, with earnings of over $300 000 for the year and a PGA Tour exemption at the end of the season. He made seven cuts during the season as his game continued to improve. Earlier this season, Reed recorded his first top-10 finish at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Sunday’s victory marks a milestone in Reed’s early career. With a PGA title to his name, this talented and instantly likeable young golfer should become a regular contender on the Tour in the coming seasons.
