On Sunday, England’s Tommy Fleetwood won the first European Tour title of his career at the Johnny Walker Championship. This week’s player profile introduces golf fans to this talented young player who is hitting his stride on the European circuit.
22-year-old Fleetwood was born in 1991 in the English city of Southport. His love of golf flourished during his teens and by the time he was college-going age, the young Fleetwood had racked up several impressive amateur wins.
Fleetwood first came to the golfing world’s attention when he placed second at the 2008 Amateur Championship. The following year, he won his first-ever tournament at the Scottish Amateur Stroke Play Championship and was victorious again in 2010 at the English Amateur.
In 2010 Fleetwood made his professional debut on the second-tier Challenge Tour. His first season was a successful one as he weathered the competition to card several top-10 finishes for the season. In 2011 he joined the European Tour, while continuing to play events on the Challenge Tour – his first professional win came at the 2011 Kazakhstan Open.
Fleetwood’s first two years on the European Tour were consistent, but the young Briton kept a low profile as he consolidated his game tournament by tournament. Making enough cuts to retain his Tour card into the 2013 season, Fleetwood hit his stride this year with consistently good finishes and a more refined playing style.
On Sunday, golf fans were treated to a taste of things to come when Fleetwood claimed his first victory on the European Tour in a three-way playoff. Remaining calm as he faced off against Stephen Gallacher of Scotland and the Argentinean Ricardo Gonzalez, the young champion played with precision on the final hole to clinch the title.
